Asphalt in Bend has to survive hot sun, cold nights, snowplows, de-icer, freeze-thaw cycles and repeated winter moisture. That makes base preparation, drainage and crack control just as important as the black surface you see when the job is finished.

New paving

Patching

Overlay or resurfacing
An overlay places new asphalt over an existing surface. It can be a good middle ground when the base is still sound, but it will not fix drainage or structural failures underneath. Ask how the contractor determines whether the existing base can support an overlay.

Edges
Unsupported edges can crumble when tires repeatedly drive over them. Ask how edges will be compacted and supported, especially on narrow driveways or where asphalt meets landscaping.
Sealcoating: when can you drive on it?
Drying time depends on the product, temperature, sun, shade, humidity and how heavily it was applied. Contractors may allow foot traffic sooner than vehicle traffic.
If access timing matters, ask before the job is scheduled:
- When can people walk on it?
- When can cars drive on it?
- Does overnight cold change that timing?
- What happens if rain is forecast?
- Will the contractor barricade the driveway?
- When can sprinklers run again?
Do not rely on a generic “next day” rule when your driveway receives less sun or nighttime temperatures are dropping.
Asphalt paving season in Bend
Warm, dry weather generally gives contractors the best conditions for paving and sealcoating. Spring and fall can work well, but cold nights narrow the installation window. Winter is usually better suited to temporary repairs than major paving.

Verify the contractor
Oregon generally requires contractors performing construction work for compensation to hold the appropriate Construction Contractors Board license. Before paying a deposit, verify the company and license status through the Oregon CCB rather than relying only on a logo or license number printed on a proposal.

How often should asphalt be sealcoated?
There is no universal Bend schedule. Sun exposure, age, traffic, prior products and pavement condition all matter.
