    Camping for the 4th

Looking to spend the holiday weekend under the stars? Camping near Bend over the 4th of July is a classic Central Oregon experience. From lakeside getaways to forested retreats, here are some of the best camping spots to soak up the long weekend:

    Elk Lake Campground
Just off the Cascade Lakes Highway, Elk Lake is a favorite for paddleboarding, swimming, and relaxing by the water. Campsites fill up fast, so plan ahead or look for nearby dispersed options.

    Sparks Lake
Popular with kayakers and photographers, Sparks Lake offers dramatic mountain views and peaceful paddling. There are no developed campgrounds here, but dispersed camping is allowed nearby.

    Tumalo State Park
Close to town but still surrounded by nature, Tumalo State Park has river access, showers, and reservable sites. It’s a great pick for families or anyone wanting a mix of outdoors and convenience.

    Lava Lake Campground
Nestled in the forest with easy access to the water, Lava Lake is perfect for fishing, boating, or just hanging out lakeside. It’s also close to a number of scenic hiking trails.

    Hosmer Lake (Dispersed Camping)
A bit quieter than Elk or Sparks, Hosmer is a great choice for a mellow, wildlife-rich camping experience. Paddle through the lake’s winding channels and take in views of Mt. Bachelor and South Sister.

East Lake & Paulina Lake (Newberry National Volcanic Monument)
For something different, head to the caldera. Both lakes offer beautiful camping, boating, and hiking opportunities with a slightly cooler climate and less holiday bustle.

Scenic Drives to Escape the 4th of July Crowds

Not everyone wants to be in the middle of the action on the 4th of July—and that’s totally fair. If you’re looking to trade the crowds for quiet roads, mountain views, and fresh air, these scenic drives offer the perfect getaway.

    Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway
This is Central Oregon’s signature drive. Head west out of Bend and wind past alpine lakes, lava flows, and snow-capped peaks. Stop at spots like Elk Lake, Sparks Lake, or Lava Lake—or just take in the views from the car. It’s beautiful the whole way through.

McKenzie Pass – Scenic Highway 242
Only open seasonally (check conditions), this dramatic route climbs through lava fields and dense forest, offering stunning views of the Cascades. The Dee Wright Observatory at the summit is a great stop. Quiet, otherworldly, and absolutely worth the drive.

Ochoco National Forest (via Highway 126 to Prineville and beyond)
Want to head east? The Ochocos offer peaceful forest roads, wildflowers, and wide-open skies. Great for a day of exploring without the buzz of holiday crowds. Keep going past Prineville for even more solitude.

Newberry National Volcanic Monument – Paulina and East Lakes
Drive south to La Pine, then wind your way up to the crater rim. Along the way, you’ll pass obsidian flows, old lava domes, and eventually reach Paulina and East Lakes. It’s a different landscape than the Cascades—and a quiet, scenic spot to spend the day.

    Skyliners Road to Tumalo Falls
If you’re short on time but still want a pretty drive, head up Skyliners Road from Bend. You’ll end at the trailhead for Tumalo Falls (go early if you want to avoid crowds), and the drive itself is peaceful and lined with forest.
